Warning

Gateway Recovery Management can only be started when a user has administrator privileges under Windows.

If you restore the system from CD/DVD to the original hard disk without any re-configuration, the hidden partition will be retained. If you recover on a brand new hard disk instead of the old one, the Gateway Recovery Management partition will no longer exist.

The backup discs created by Gateway Recovery Management will work better with the optical drive that came with your machine. They may not work as well in other optical drives.

Restoration

When you select Restore, the restore page opens and displays the following options. Before starting the restore process, you will need to enter your password (if set). Then confirm your password to prevent any unintentional action. It will restart your computer and enter the restoration environment.

·         Completely Restore System to Factory Defaults

This option will return your computer to its factory default settings. After the restore process, all files and settings, and all updates or software installed since the computer was first used will be deleted.

We recommend this recovery if your computer is infected by a persistent virus or malware, or if other recovery options fail.

·        Restore Operating System and Retain User Data

This option will return Windows to the same state as when purchased, but will transfer files from user accounts to C:\backup. Updates and software installed since the computer was first used will be deleted or will not function until reinstalled. Please note this option will not remove persistent viruses or malware.

After recovery, you may create new user accounts and transfer retained files from old user accounts (found in C:\backup).

If this option fails to repair your computer, please select Completely Restore System to Factory Defaults and recover the system again.

·         Reinstall Drivers and Applications

If you choose Reinstall Drivers and Applications, Gateway Recovery Management opens a new page that contains a list of available software and/or drivers for your model.

To print on cards:

Insert a stack of cards, up to 19 mm (0.75 in.) in thickness, print-side down along the right side of the main paper tray, until it stops.
From the length adjuster, extend the postcard guide.

Slide the postcard guide and the paper width adjuster in until they stop at the edges of the cards.

For Windows:
In the printer driver, click the Paper/Quality tab and do the following (for instructions on accessing the printer driver, see Changing print settings):

In the Type is drop-down list, select the paper type you are using (such as HP Textured Greeting Cards).
In the Size is drop-down list, select the size of the cards you are printing; or click Custom if none of the sizes match the card size you are printing.

For Macintosh:

Select the size of the cards you are printing.

Extent of Limited Warranty

Hewlett-Packard warrants to the end-user customer that the HP products specified above will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for the duration specified above, which duration begins on the date of purchase by the customer.
For software products, HP's limited warranty applies only to a failure to execute programming instructions. HP does not warrant that the operation of any product will be uninterrupted or error free.
HP's limited warranty covers only those defects that arise as a result of normal use of the product, and does not cover any other problems, including those that arise as a result of:

When you use Gateway Recovery Management, you can set a password for your personal safety. To create your own password, select Settings then click the Create a New Password button. It will direct you to set your password.

When you restore the system, you will be prompted to enter the password if password exists.

Gateway Recovery Management does away with the need for recovery discs provided by the manufacturer. Gateway Recovery Management occupies space in a hidden partition on your system's hard disk and allows you to perform restore operations and to burn factory default image.

Gateway Recovery Management requires a specific hard disk partitioning structure to function. If the system detects that the hard disk does not use this structure, Gateway Recovery Management will be disabled.

Workspace

Performance (all applications)
A minimum 200 MB paging file is recommended for best performance when using CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 12 applications. Paging file sizes are set in the Operating system >Virtual memory controls.

Color Management:

    * Composite output of duotones is grayscale.

Import/Export

    PDF

        * JP2 import filter supports JPEG 2000 Standard and JPEG 2000 Codestream.
        * JPEG 2000 Codestream uses the .jp2 filename extension with metadata on export.

    Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG)

        * The following units are supported on export: inches, centimeters, millimeters, pixels and percentage.
        * The W3C Filter effects, Interact, Script, Animation, Extend, and DOM features are not supported.
        * Gradient and pattern outlines are not supported on import.
        * Images containing lenses may not export properly to SVG.
        * Rounded rectangles are converted to curves on import.
        * To preview SVG files through the SVG export dialog box, you need an SVG viewer.

    Visio (VSD)

        * Versions 4, 5, and 2002 are supported.

    QuickTime (MOV)

    AutoCAD (DXF)

    * When importing DXF files, the Auto-reduce nodes option removes hidden lines caused by multiple views within the file. It does not modify nodes on curve objects.

Only PostScript Level 2 (or higher) printers support JPEG encoding; sending a JPEG-encoded file to a PostScript Level 1 output device may result in PostScript language errors.

Some print spooler programs, computer networks, and third-party printer drivers don't support files that are binary or JPEG-encoded, and some PostScript output devices accept binary and JPEG-encoded image data only through their AppleTalk and Ethernet ports, not their parallel or serial ports. In these situations, you can select the ASCII85 encoding method. However, ASCII85 files contain about twice as many characters and require about twice as much time to transfer as binary files.

To change the encoding method:

1. Choose File > Print with Preview.
2. Select Show More Options, and choose Output from the pop-up menu.
3. Select an option from the Encoding menu.

When preparing your image for prepress and working with CMYK images or images with spot colors, you can print each color channel as a separate page.

Note: If you are printing an image from another application and want to print spot channels to spot color plates, you must first save the file in DCS 2.0 format. DCS 2.0 preserves spot channels and is supported by applications such as Adobe InDesign, Adobe PageMaker, and QuarkXPress®. (See Saving files in Photoshop EPS format (Photoshop).)

To print separations from Photoshop:

1. Make sure your document is in CMYK Color or Multichannel mode, and then choose File > Print with Preview.
2. Select Show More Options, and choose Color Management from the pop-up menu.
3. Choose Separations from the Profile pop-up menu.

Note: Depending on the designated printer and print drivers on your computer, these options may also appear in the Print dialog box (for setting printer options). On Windows, click the Properties button to access the printer driver options. On Mac OS, use the pop-up menu to access the printer driver options.
4. Click Print. Separations are printed for each of the colors in the image.

To prepare an image with spot channels for printing from another application:

1. If the image is a duotone, convert to Multichannel color mode.
2. Save the image in DCS 2.0 format.
3. In the DCS 2.0 Format dialog box, be sure to deselect the Include Halftone Screen and the Include Transfer Function options. (See Saving files in Photoshop EPS format (Photoshop).)
4. Open or import the image in the application you will be printing from, and set your screen angles. Make sure that you've communicated to the printer the spot color you want for each of the color plates.

Note: You can place a PSD file containing spot colors directly in InDesign CS without special preparation.

Selecting halftone screen attributes

Halftone screen attributes include the screen frequency and dot shape for each screen used in the printing process. For color separations, the prepress person must also specify an angle for each of the color screens. Setting the screens at different angles ensures that the dots placed by the four screens blend to look like continuous color and do not produce moiré patterns.

Halftone screens consist of dots that control how much ink is deposited at a specific location on-press. Varying their size and density creates the illusion of variations of gray or continuous color. For a process color image, four halftone screens are used: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black--one for each ink used in the printing process.

In traditional print production, a halftone is produced by placing a halftone screen between a piece of film and the image and then exposing the film. In Photoshop, you specify the halftone screen attributes just before producing the film or paper output. For best results, your output device (a PostScript imagesetter, for example) should be set to the correct density limit, and your processor should be properly calibrated; otherwise, results can be unpredictable.

Before creating your halftone screens, check with your print shop for preferred frequency, angle, and dot settings. (Use the default angle settings unless your print shop specifies changes.)

To define the screen attributes:

1. Choose File > Print with Preview.
2. Select Show More Options, choose Output from the pop-up menu, and click Screen.
3. In the Halftone Screens dialog box, choose whether to generate your own screen settings:
* Deselect Use Printer's Default Screens to choose your own screen settings.
* Select Use Printer's Default Screens to use the default halftone screen built into the printer. Photoshop then ignores the specifications in the Halftone Screens dialog box when it generates the halftone screens.
4. For a grayscale halftone, enter a screen frequency from 1 to 999.999, and choose a unit of measurement. Enter a screen angle from -180 to +180 degrees.
5. For a color separation, choose from the following options:
* To manually enter the screen frequency and angle, choose a color of the screen for Ink, and enter the frequency and angle; repeat for each color separation.
* To have Photoshop determine and enter the best frequencies and angles for each screen, click Auto. In the Auto Screens dialog box, enter the resolution of the output device and the screen frequency you intend to use, and click OK. Photoshop enters the values in the Halftone Screens dialog box. Changing these values may result in moiré patterns.
* If you are using a PostScript Level 2 (or higher) printer or an imagesetter equipped with an Emerald controller, make sure that the Use Accurate Screens option is selected in the Auto Screens dialog box (or in the Halftone Screens dialog box, if you're entering the values manually). The Use Accurate Screens option lets the program access the correct angles and halftone screen frequencies for high-resolution output. If your output device is not a PostScript Level 2 (or higher) printer or is not equipped with an Emerald controller, this option has no effect.
6. For Shape, choose the dot shape you want. If you want all four screens to have the same dot shape, select Use Same Shape For All Inks.

Choosing Custom from the Shape menu displays the Custom Spot Function dialog box. You can define your own dot shapes by entering PostScript commands--useful for printing with nonstandard halftone algorithms. For information about using PostScript language commands, see the PostScript Language Reference published by Addison-Wesley, or consult the imagesetter's manufacturer.

For optimal output on a PostScript printer, the image resolution should be 1.5 to 2 times the halftone screen frequency. If the resolution is more than 2.5 times the screen frequency, an alert message appears. (See Understanding image size and resolution.) If you are printing line art or printing to a non-PostScript printer, see your printer documentation for the appropriate image resolutions to use.
7. Click OK.

To save halftone screen settings:

In the Halftone Screens dialog box, click Save. Choose a location for the saved settings, enter a filename, and click Save.

To load halftone screen settings:

In the Halftone Screens dialog box, click Load. Locate and select the settings, and click Load.

If you are preparing your images for commercial printing directly from Photoshop, you can select and preview a variety of page marks and other output options using the Print with Preview command.

To set output options:

1. Choose File > Print with Preview.
2. Select Show More Options, and choose Output from the pop-up menu.

Note: Options not supported by the designated printer are dimmed.
3. Set one or more of the following options:

Background

Lets you select a background color to be printed on the page outside the image area. For example, a black or colored background may be desirable for slides printed to a film recorder. To use this option, click Background, and then select a color from the Color Picker dialog box. This is a printing option only; it does not affect the image itself.

Border

Lets you print a black border around an image. Type in a number and choose a unit value to specify the width of the border.

Bleed

Lets you print crop marks inside rather than outside the image. Use this option when you want to trim the image within the graphic. Type a number and choose a unit value to specify the width of the bleed.

Screen

Lets you set the screen frequency and dot shape for each screen used in the printing process. (See Selecting halftone screen attributes.)

Transfer

Lets you adjust the transfer functions, traditionally used to compensate for dot gain or dot loss that may occur when an image is transferred to film. This option is recognized only when you print directly from Photoshop, or when you save the file in EPS format and print to a PostScript printer. Generally, it's best to adjust for dot gain using the settings in the CMYK Setup dialog box. Transfer functions are useful, however, when compensating for a poorly calibrated output device. (See Compensating for dot gain in film using transfer functions.)

Interpolation

Reduces the jagged appearance of a low-resolution image by automatically resampling up while printing. However, resampling may reduce the sharpness of the image quality. (See About resampling.) Some PostScript Level 2 (or higher) printers have interpolation capability. If your printer doesn't, this option has no effect.

Calibration Bars

Prints an 11-step grayscale, a transition in density from 0 to 100% in 10% increments. With a CMYK color separation, a gradient tint bar is printed to the left of each CMY plate, and a progressive color bar to the right.

Note: Calibration bars, registration marks, crop marks, and labels will print only if the paper size is larger than the printed image dimensions.

Registration Marks

Prints registration marks on the image (including bull's-eyes and star targets). These marks are used primarily for aligning color separations.

Corner Crop Marks

Prints crop marks where the page is to be trimmed. You can print crop marks at the corners.

Center Crop Marks

Prints crop marks where the page is to be trimmed. You can print crop marks at the center of each edge.

Description

Prints any description text entered in the File Info dialog box up to about 300 characters. (See Adding file information (Photoshop).) Description text always prints as 9-point Helvetica plain type.

Labels

Prints the filename above the image.

Emulsion Down

Makes type readable when the emulsion is down--that is, when the photosensitive layer on a piece of film or photographic paper is facing away from you. Normally, images printed on paper are printed with emulsion up, with type readable when the photosensitive layer faces you. Images printed on film are often printed with emulsion down.

Negative

Prints an inverted version of the entire output, including all masks and any background color. Unlike the Invert command in the Image menu, the Negative option converts the output, not the on-screen image, to a negative. If you print separations directly to film, you probably want a negative, although in many countries film positives are common. Check with your print shop to determine which is required.

To determine the emulsion side, examine the film under a bright light after it has been developed. The dull side is the emulsion; the shiny side is the base. Check whether your print shop requires film with positive emulsion up, negative emulsion up, positive emulsion down, or negative emulsion down.

Using data sets

A data set is a collection of variables and associated data. You can switch between data sets to upload different data into your template.

Assigning data values to variables to create two data sets

To edit the default data set:

1. Do one of the following:
* Choose Image > Variables > Data Sets.
* If the Variables dialog box is open, choose Data Sets from the pop-up menu at the top of the dialog box, or click Next.
* Choose Variables from the Layers palette menu. Then choose Data Sets from the pop-up menu at the top of the dialog box, or click Next.

Note: You must define at least one variable before you can edit the default data set.
2. Select a variable from the Name pop-up menu or the list at the bottom of the dialog box.
3. Edit the variable data:
* For Visibility variables Visibility variable, select Visible to show the layer's content or Invisible to hide the layer's content.
* For Pixel Replacement variables Pixel Replacement variable, click Browse (Windows) or Choose (Mac OS) and select a replacement image file.
* For Text Replacement variables Text Replacement variable, enter a text string in the Value text box.
4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for every variable in the template.
5. Click OK, or click Next.

To create a new data set:

1. Click the New Data Set button New button.
2. Edit the variable data.
3. Click OK.

To rename a data set:

Enter a name in the Data Set text box.

To select a data set:

Do one of the following:
* Choose a data set from the Data Set pop-up menu.
* Click the Previous Data Set button Previous Tile button to select the previous set in the list.
* Click the Next Data Set button Next button to select the next set in the list.

To change the data in a data set:

1. Select the data set you want to modify.
2. Edit the variable data.
3. Click OK.

To delete a data set:

1. Select the data set you want to delete.
2. Click the Trash button Trash button .

Using variables

You use variables to define which elements in a template are dynamic (changeable). A variable's type corresponds to the type of data you want to change in a template. Visibility variables let you show or hide the content of a layer. Pixel Replacement variables let you replace the pixels in the layer with pixels from another image file. Text Replacement variables let you replace a string of text in a type layer.

Note: You can use Photoshop to designate text as a variable for Adobe GoLive, if you put your variable text in the topmost text layer. Otherwise, you can use ImageReady to explicitly denote variables. GoLive recognizes all ImageReady text and visibility variables, but not pixel replacement variables.

To define variables:

1. In the Layers palette, select a layer for which you want to define variables.

Note: You cannot define variables for the Background layer.
2. Choose Image > Variables > Define, or choose Variables from the Layers palette menu.
3. Select one or more types of variables:
* Visibility to show or hide the content of the layer.
* Pixel Replacement to replace the pixels in the layer with pixels from another image file.

Note: You specify the replacement image (as well as the replacement text and visibility states) when you define a data set. (See Using data sets.)
* Text Replacement to replace a string of text in a type layer.
4. If desired, enter names for the variables. Variable names must begin with a letter, underscore, or colon and cannot contain spaces or special characters (except for periods, hyphens, underscores, and colons).
5. For Pixel Replacement variables, click Pixel Replacement Options, and do the following:
* Choose a method for scaling the replacement image: Fit to scale the image to fit within the bounding box (which may leave parts of the bounding box empty), Fill to scale the image to entirely fill the bounding box (which may cause the image to extend beyond the bounding box), As Is to not scale the image, and Conform to scale the image non-proportionally to fit within the bounding box.
* Click a handle on the alignment icon Center Point icon to choose an alignment for placing the image inside the bounding box.
* Select Clip to Bounding Box to clip areas of the image that do not fit within the bounding box. This option is only available when the Fill replacement method or As Is replacement method is selected.
6. To define variables for an additional layer, choose a layer from the Layer pop-up menu. Repeat Steps 3 through 5.
7. Click OK.

To rename a variable:

1. Choose Image > Variables > Define, or choose Variables from the Layers palette menu.
2. Choose the layer that contains the variable from the Layer pop-up menu.
3. Enter a name in the Name text box. Variable names must begin with a letter, underscore, or colon and cannot contain spaces or special characters (except for periods, hyphens, underscores, and colons).

Note: If you are using data sets and want to rename a variable globally (in all layers), change the name in the Data Sets section of the Variable dialog box. (See Using data sets.)

3. Deselect one or more variables.

About data-driven graphics

Data-driven graphics make it possible to produce multiple versions of an image quickly and accurately. Let's say, for example, that you need to produce 500 different Web banners based on the same template. In the past, you had to manually populate the template with data (images, text, and so on). With data-driven graphics, you can quickly generate Web banners using variables and data sets.

You can turn any image into a template for data-driven graphics by defining variables for layers in the image. In addition, you can create different sets of variable data to view what your template will look like when it is rendered.

Using Photoshop shapes

Adobe Photoshop makes it easy to add shapes to an image: you can draw them using a variety of shape tools, or select from a large assortment of predrawn shapes. You can arrange vector shapes on separate layers for easy modification and overlay effects. In this tutorial, you'll add both background and foreground shapes to an image and create some flair with gradient and layer effects.

1. Open an Image in Photoshop.

Choose File > Open or double-click a thumbnail in the File browser. For this tutorial, you might want to start with an image that has at least two layers. First we'll add shapes to build a more interesting background for the image.

2. Select the rectangle tool.

Select the Rectangle tool from the toolbox. By default, the Shape Layers button in the options bar is selected. Use this option to create a vector shape, which is automatically placed on a new layer. (Adjacent icons in the palette let you create a path or a rasterized shape on the current layer.)

3. Create a rectangle shape.

In the Layers palette, select the bottom layer in your image. Click and drag to create a rectangle covering the right half of the image.The rectangle uses the foreground color by default. To change the color, double-click the layer thumbnail to bring up the color picker and select a new color.

4. Add gradients to a shape.

Now we'll add two more rectangle shapes, this time with gradient effects. Using the Rectangle Shape tool, drag a new rectangle to cover the top left quarter of the image. Click the foreground color swatch and select a new color for this rectangle. Choose Layer > Change Layer Content > Gradient. Leave Gradient at the default selection, Foreground to Transparent. Set Style to Linear and the angle to -50. Repeat these steps to create a second rectangle, this time with an angle of 20.

5. Load custom shapes.

Select the Custom Shape tool in the toolbox. In the options bar, click the down arrow to open the Custom Shape Picker. Click the black triangle to open the palette menu and select All, and then click Append. This loads all of Photoshop's predrawn shapes into the Custom Shapes palette.

6. Draw a custom shape.

Now we'll add a custom shape to the foreground for an overlay effect. Select the top layer of the image, and use the foreground color swatch to select a color for the new shape. Select a custom shape from the Custom Shapes palette. (For our image, we chose the sunburst shape.) Holding down the Shift key to constrain proportions, click and drag in the image to draw the shape.

Since it's a vector shape on its own level, the sunburst is easy to move or resize. Select the layer and then use the Move tool to move the shape, or choose Edit > Free Transform to resize, rotate, flip, or skew it.

7. Fill the custom shape with a pattern.

Next we'll apply one of Photoshop's pattern effects to make our shape more interesting. Select the new shape in the layers palette, and then choose Layer > Change Layer Content > Pattern. Click the pattern in the Pattern Fill dialog box to open the Patterns palette. Click the black triangle to open the palette menu.

The palette menu shows different sets of patterns--Artist Surfaces, Color Paper, Nature Patterns, and so on--that you can add to your basic patterns palette. Select a set, and then click Append. Click a pattern to apply it to the custom shape. To change your shape back to a solid color or to a gradient, choose the Layer > Change Layer Content command again.

8. Add a layer effect to the shape.

To enhance your shape further, you can add layer effects to it. With the shape layer selected, click the Add a Layer Style button. Choose Stroke from the menu. In the Layer Style dialog box, choose settings for the stroke color, width, and position, and then click OK.

Experiment with different blending modes for the layer, such as Hue, Darken, or Multiply, using the mode menu in the Layers palette. To remove a layer effect, select the effect in the Layers palette and drag it to the Delete Layer icon.

Produce great prints using Print with Preview

What's a great way to produce color prints from your inkjet printer? Use the Print with Preview command in Adobe Photoshop. The Print with Preview command lets you preview how your photo will print so the results are more predictable. You'll learn how to add a simple border around your photo and then transform it into a frame by adding a texture and layer style.

1. Open the photo you want to print.

Choose File > Open or double-click a thumbnail in the File Browser.

You should do any retouching or tonal correction to your photo before printing it.

2. Choose the Print with Preview command.

Choose File > Print with Preview.

The Print with Preview command lets you see a preview of how an image will print on a page and control how it will print. The preview updates as you specify the position and scale of the image.

3. Position the image.

Deselect the Center Image option so that you can enter Top and Left values to reposition the image. You can also drag the preview image to the desired position. If the page is not correctly oriented for the image, you can click the Page Setup button and select an orientation in the Page Setup dialog box.

Don't specify a scaling percentage in the Page Setup dialog box. Instead, use the scale controls in the Print dialog box. Specifying the scaling in both the Page Setup dialog box and the Print dialog box will apply scaling twice, and your image will not print at the size you expect.

4. Scale the image.

You can scale the image in several ways. Select the Scale to Fit Media option and Photoshop automatically fits the image to the page. You can also manually enter values for the Scale, Height and Width. Or, you can grab one of the handles in the preview image and scale the photo.

5. Set the color management options and click the Print button.

Select Show More Options. Choose Color Management from the menu in the More Options area. Select Document for the Source Space. If you want Photoshop to handle color management during printing, choose your printer's profile from the Profile menu in the Print Space area. If you prefer to let your printer's driver handle the color management, then choose Printer Color Management from the Profile menu. Click the Print button. The Print dialog box closes, and a second Print dialog box opens.

Color management is essential for producing consistent color when printing. Whether you let Photoshop or your printer driver control color management, you'll get the best results using a custom profile for your printer and the specific type of paper you're printing on.

6. Specify the printer settings.

In the second Print dialog box, choose your printing options. On Windows, click the Properties button, then the Advanced button, to access the printer driver options. On Mac OS, use the pop-up menu to access the printer driver options. If you chose Printer Color Management in the previous step, specify the color management settings. If you're letting Photoshop control the color management, then make sure any color management options are turned off.

Do not apply color management twice to your image. Unpredictable print color will result if color management is done with both Photoshop and the printer driver simultaneously.

7. Print the image.

Once all the settings have been made in the printer options dialog box, click the Print button.

Using Photoshop selection tools

Having trouble deciding how to select part of your image? Adobe Photoshop gives you several tools that help you target just the areas you need to select. In this tutorial, you'll learn about the best way to use each of the selection tools.You can practice with the eagle image, located in the Photoshop CS/Samples folder.

1. Use the Magic Wand tool to select the background of the image.

Since the eagle in our image has a well-defined shape, and since the colors in the eagle are different than the green background, we can select it using the Magic Wand tool. Select the Magic Wand tool, and then click anywhere in the green background. The green area is surrounded by a marquee and is now editable. Try dragging a paintbrush over the whole image to see how the eagle is protected.

2. Invert your selection.

Because our background was so easy to select, we'll invert the selection so that just the eagle is selected. Choose Select > Inverse. You'll see the selection border change so that the eagle is surrounded. This is an easy method to make a selection when you have an image like the eagle. You could now work with the eagle without disturbing the background of the image. For now, choose Select > Deselect so we can try out another tool.

3. Use the Elliptical Marquee tool to select the eagle's eye.

Select the Elliptical Marquee tool, and then drag to draw a selection border around the eagle's eye. To reposition the selection border while you're drawing it, hold the spacebar and drag the selection border into a new position. To move the selection border after it's created, click anywhere inside the border and drag.

4. Use the Magnetic Lasso to select the eagle's beak.

Select the Magnetic Lasso tool (located in the toolbox with the Lasso tool), and then click and drag around the beak. The Magnetic Lasso tool makes free-form selections easier because it traces around an object. It works best when you have a clearly defined edge, like the eagle's beak. The tool places anchors while you drag (you can remove anchors while you're dragging by pressing the Delete key). To finish the selection border, click the starting anchor point (or double-click). Try moving the beak using the Move tool. Choose Edit > Undo to return the beak to its correct position. Then choose Select > Deselect to deselect the beak.

5. Add to a selection.

Select the Marquee tool, and make a rough selection of the eagle's body. Once you've made a selection, you can add to the selection border without having to start over. Select the Magnetic Lasso tool, and click the Add to Selection icon in the options bar. Refine your selection by dragging around the outside of the eagle (you'll notice a small plus sign below the tool pointer). Release the mouse. The selection border now includes the area you selected with the Magnetic Lasso tool.

Create an image using layers

When you build an image from different pieces--background color, text, shapes, and photographs--Adobe Photoshop layers give you complete creative control. In this tutorial you'll create a multilayered image, apply a layer mask, and then add a text layer.

1. Open an Image in Photoshop.

Choose File > Open or double-click a thumbnail in the File Browser.

By default, the Layers palette should show. If not, choose Window > Layers. The Layers palette displays all the layers in your document with the layer name and a thumbnail of the layer's image.

2. Convert the background layer.

In the Layers palette, double-click the background layer. Click OK in the New Layer dialog. Converting the background into a regular layer lets you use transparency in this layer. You can now view or hide the layer using the eye icon. Click the eye icon on a layer. Notice that the icon disappears and the layer is hidden. Click the empty icon box again. Both the eye icon and the layer's content reappear.

3. Apply a layer mask.

A layer mask lets you select and display just the part of the image you want to use, without altering the image. Here we'll mask out all of the image except a circular area of the flower. Click and hold the Rectangular Marquee tool, and then select the Elliptical Marquee tool from the pop-up menu. Hold down the Shift key to constrain the selection to a circle, and then drag an area on the image. In the Layers palette, click the Add Layer Mask icon.

Now only the area you selected is visible. You can change the visible area by moving the mask around the image. First click the link icon to unlink the mask from the layer. Select the Move tool, and then click inside the mask and drag to reposition it. Once you have your final position, click the link icon to relink the mask and the layer. Now you can move the layer and the mask will move with it.

4. Add a stroke effect.

Click the Add a Layer Style button at the bottom of the Layers palette, and select Stroke from the menu. Choose stroke settings in the Layer Style dialog box, including color, size, and position of the stroke.

5. Create a new layer.

Click the Create a New Layer button to add a new layer to the image. The new layer is added on top of existing layers and becomes the selected layer. Open the image that you want to repair. Try zooming in so you can easily see the red eyes that need to be fixed. Then, select the Color Replacement tool (located in the toolbox with the Healing Brush and Patch tool).

2. Choose a brush tip.

Choose a brush tip from the options bar. The brush tip should be smaller than the red area of the eye to make correcting the red-eye easier.

3. Set options for the Color Replacement tool.

Adobe Photoshop's Levels command lets you correct the tonal range and color balance of an image by adjusting intensity levels of the image's shadows, midtones, and highlights. In this tutorial, you'll learn how to adjust the tonality and color in your images using the Levels command.

1. Open an Image in Photoshop.

Choose File > Open or double-click a thumbnail in the File Browser. Before you start making adjustments, evaluate the image tonality. Is it too light or dark? Does it have too much or too little contrast? Is there a color cast?

2. Create a new Levels adjustment layer.

Choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels, and then click OK in the New Layer dialog box. You can also open the Levels command by choosing Image > Adjustments > Levels. However, with an adjustment layer, you are applying the tonal correction on a separate layer. The original image is untouched. If you decide you don't like your changes, you can change them at any time or simply discard the adjustment layer and return to your original image.

A useful tool for evaluating an image's tonality is the histogram displayed in the Levels dialog box. A histogram illustrates how pixels in an image are distributed by graphing the number of pixels at each color intensity level. This can show you whether the image contains enough detail in the shadows (shown in the left part of the histogram), midtones (shown in the middle), and highlights (shown in the right part) to create good overall contrast in the image.

3. Set the shadows and highlights.

Move the Black Point Input slider and the White Point Input slider (located directly beneath the histogram) inward from the edges of the histogram. Moving the Black Point Input slider maps all image values at its position or below to the Output Levels black point (set by default to 0, or pure black). Moving the White Point Input slider maps image values at its position or above to the Output Levels white point (set by default to 255, or pure white).

For example, if your image is too dark, try moving the Input White Point slider to the left. This maps more values in the image to 255 (the Output Levels white point), making them lighter.

4. Adjust the midtones.

Move the middle Input slider to the left to lighten the image or to the right to darken the image.

The middle Input slider adjusts the gamma in the image. It moves the midtone (level 128) and changes the intensity values of the middle range of gray tones without dramatically altering the highlights and shadows.

5. Remove the color cast.

Select the Set Gray Point Eyedropper tool in the Levels dialog box. Click an area in the image that contains only a gray tone, or an area containing as few colors as possible. It's easier to color balance an image by first identifying an area that should be neutral and then removing the color cast from that area. With such a correction, all other colors in the image should be color balanced, too. The eyedropper tools work best on an image with easily identified neutrals.

Advanced users often use the Levels command to adjust individual channels and remove a color cast. Choose a channel from the Channel menu of the Levels dialog box and then adjust the Input sliders.

Here are some of the things you can do using Windows Messenger:

Create a contact list of your friends, family, and coworkers.
See when your contacts are online and available, and send text messages back and forth.
Send pictures, music, or documents to your contacts.
Call a computer and have a video/voice conversation using your computer microphone, speakers, and camera.
Use ink to write instant messages (requires Windows XP Tablet PC Edition).
Invite someone to look at a program on your computer or use Whiteboard together.
Use Remote Assistance to have someone help you with your computer.
